Introduction

I've been a handyman since 1987, when I quit my job as a computer programmer. I take special pride in my work. I am honest, clean-cut, and smoke, alcohol and drug free. I am healthy, and have had all my Covid shots. I love the variety of jobs I get and the satisfaction of a job well done.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My normal rate is $60 an hour, including travel time.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We communicate via Thumbtack, email or text and decide on a date to look at or do the work.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have several years of experience working for glass companies. The rest is pretty much self-taught. I read handyman magazines and talk to other professionals to learn new things.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I get asked a lot about how I came to be a handyman. After working for glass & window companies to pay my way through school, I got my college degree in computer science and became a programmer. But I got very restless working in an office all day. I've always liked repairing things, so one day I just quit my job and started my own business. I've never looked back.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I specialize in the small stuff: repairing or replacing plumbing and electrical fixtures, windows and doors, small carpentry jobs, etc. I love honey-do lists. I don't do remodeling, flooring, painting or heating and air conditioning.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I built a mud room shelf system. That's about as big a job as I'll do.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Ask if they are licensed and insured, and how many years of experience they have. It's also not a bad idea to ask for references. Don't pay them any money up front unless the job involves a custom item that can't be returned.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Give me as much detail about the project as you can, so I can decide if I want to pay for the lead. I turn down leads all the time because I have no idea what the customer wants done.
