Introduction

Boston Architects and Builders provides its clients with a full range of design and construction services from the idea stage all the way to construction completion and occupancy. Our clients deal only with us as the single source of responsibility throughout the entire project. We're passionate about listening to our clients' needs and delivering design and construction services on schedule and within budget. We specialize in custom homes, additions and remodels that meet the most stringent energy efficiency requirements. We love converting our ideas and visions for a project into the final built product. Most architects are not contractors and most contractors are not architects. As both architects and builders we provide realistic cost projections from the beginning of the project and transition seamlessly from design to construction.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We typically price the design or construction by the size and scope of the project as a lump sum fee after obtaining quotes from vendors and specialty trades that will perform the work. For small or unique projects we may provide our services based on hourly rates.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We begin with a phone conversation to understand the basic size and scope of the project. If we're a good match we will meet at the property with the owner to discuss more details about the work and the process. We then provide a proposal for our design and or construction services. Throughout the project we communicate regulary and respond to any concerns the owner has while we procure all of the permits and materials and manage all the details of the work performed by the various trades.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
My staff and I have received extensive education and training in the field of Architectural Design, Construction and Energy Efficiency. These include Master of Architecture Degree, Passive House Training, LEED Accreditation and continuing education for various licenses.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My favorite classes in high school were art (right brain) and math (left brain). I then found Architecture to be the best combination of right and left brain work - the dimensions and structural soundness cannot be compromised, while the building must also look beautiful! Over the years I also noticed that the breakdown between the design of the Architect and what was actually built by the Contractor had serious consequences for all parties involved, especially Owners who were expecting one thing and got another. This led me to build my own designs, which has proven to be a fulfilling passion for me and a wonderful experience for clients who go through the process. We call it: ARCHITECT-LED DESIGN BUILD (ALDB).

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Our customers have range from Homeowners of single and multi-family homes to investors and developers who do large spec development projects.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently completed a custom home from ground up which included extensive site work, a septic system and super insulation in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood. The Owners and I enjoyed the process of working together, meeting at showrooms to select materials, etc. In the end we were all fulfilled and they're super excited to be in their brand new dream home!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
The most important thing is: What does your gut tell you? Do you feel a synergy with this professional, or uneasy? Beyond that, if there's design work involved, it's extremely important to have an architect who understands what it costs to build things. Ask the architect how they will be sure the design is within the construction budget (it is not uncommon for construction bids to come in more than twice what the owner intended on budgeting). For contractors/builders, make sure to ask questions about who will be doing the actual work and how the process will work. Make sure to speak with people who have actually hired them for projects similar to yours, and visit one if possible. The final product may be fine, but the process may have been stressful, especially if the owner was uneasy about who was coming in and out of their home.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
The more you think about what you really want vs what you really need, the better off you'll be as you start working with professionals. Collect ideas and images, make a wish list, and then prioritize what is most important to you. Most importantly, communicate this information with the professional and get their response. This will give you a grasp of what is realistic for your project and what is not.
