Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I typically charge $50 to show up to the job and $50 for each hour of work. I can provide free estimates for larger jobs

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I typically will contact the customer to get specifics on the job-request, provide a quote within a specified time frame and allow the customer to contact me with further questions, or to set up a date to complete the project.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I am a licensed teacher with the State of Ohio, I teach construction technology, which includes the basics of wiring, framing, plumbing, and drywall. I went to Ohio State University for my formal educational training. I also worked in the commercial and residential building fields for many years. I have experience in building homes from start to finish (I built my own and helped with others), and constructing commercial buildings.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started working in the construction field many years ago as a teenager; I would go to work with my father who owned his own business. I shifted over and started working in commercial and industrial construction when I got older. I built my own home in 2004 and have assisted in the building of others. For the last 11 years I have been teaching classes in construction technology.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
All types from Commercial to Residential

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I just finished a basement for a client. He had about 800 square feet that I framed up, drywalled, wired and finished. There was also plumbing that I installed for a washer and dryer. This project took 3 weeks - working 8 hours a day. This client had his teenage son assist with the project, that way I could teach him everything we were working on. As a teacher, I always welcome the opportunity to pass on what I know.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
When you hire a contractor, you should feel confident that he knows what he is doing. Ask questions. Look at reviews. If you get the feeling that he doesn’t know what he is doing, then you are probably right. A good contractor should be able to guide you through the process and explain everything that he is doing.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
One of the things that I would recommend that that you give enough information to the professional. For example, if you write “need a wall repair," the contractor will have questions like: 1. Where is the wall? How high is it (8' vs. 24') 2. Is the wall or ceiling textured, because matching textured ceilings can be difficult 3. Repair small hole or large hole 4. Do you want the drywall finished and painted? Drywall repairs are usually 2 trips, because the drywall mud has to dry and be sanded
