Introduction

Before moving forward, please understand that my pool is in Bowie, MD. You must be willing to drive to Bowie, MD for lessons/training. With a competitive swimming background from middle school through NCAA Division 1, I bring not only elite-level experience but also the patience of a parent, the structure of a classroom teacher, and a deep passion for sharing the life-saving skill of swimming. I specialize in helping swimmers of all ages—particularly those 8 and older, as well as adults—overcome fear, build confidence, and develop strong technique. Whether you’re looking for lifeguard preparation, military swim test training, fitness-based swim workouts, or triathlon training, I can create a personalized plan to help you reach your goals. I take pride in guiding hesitant beginners into becoming capable, confident swimmers who not only feel safe in the water but can also take their skills to the next level—whether that’s joining a swim team, passing a lifeguard or military swim test, or even getting SCUBA certified. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We'll talk first so I can get a gauge of your goals. Then, I'll meet you where your skills are and we'll begin to progressively get to your goal.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
At the age of 11, I became a competitive swimmer. I swam for the PDR swim team, featured in the movie PRIDE. I reached my goal of becoming a NCAA Division I swimmer. I was a lifeguard for about 10 years, starting at age 15. I have been teaching lessons for over 20 years now. In 2023, I completed the WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certification. It is a credential issued by the American Red Cross that qualifies individuals to teach swim lessons and water safety courses. It covers essential skills such as stroke technique, swim instruction methods, class management, and water safety education. A WSI-certified instructor can teach people of all ages how to swim, improve their technique, and stay safe in and around water.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
It was 2001... My first official set of lessons were with two brothers (aged 4 & 6). Their mother knew all the lifeguards at the pool swam for PDR and asked if any of us could teach her sons how to swim. I accepted the challenge. After teaching them at 3+ times per week, they were proficient swimmers by the end of the summer. The 4 year old actually ended up better than the 6 year old. I'm proud to say they both eventually joined the PDR swim team.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I've worked with beginners from ages 4 to 70. I've worked with kids and teens hoping to make a swim team. I've worked with teens to improve their skills and endurance in order to be able to qualify for the lifeguard certification course. I've worked with triathletes who wanted to improve their technique and endurance for triathlons. I've worked with adult lap swimmers on technique training to help with their workouts. I've worked with military members who needed training in order to pass specific swim tests.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
The client I've had with the quickest progress was a 36 year old woman who came for lessons twice per week for 1 hour each. She was a beginner and couldn't swim at all to start. After 6 lessons, she was able to complete 6 laps of freestyle swimming during the lesson.
