Introduction

I love tutoring and have enjoyed working with students of all ages for over fifteen years. I teach all subjects for students in elementary and middle school, and I teach humanities (English, writing, grammar, ESL, history, literature, etc.) for students of any age. Much of my experience has been helping students prepare for standardized tests like the ISEE/HSPT and the verbal portions of ACT/SAT. My experience includes working with students with learning differences. I first taught at Landmark School, a school in Massachusetts for students with language-based learning differences. Landmark was a wonderful place to begin learning the craft of teaching; its educational philosophy stresses the importance of both honoring a student’s unique learning style and modifying curriculum to meet particular needs. Because of my experience at Landmark, I am able to specialize in teaching phonics, reading comprehension and writing. My undergraduate education at St. John’s College also prepared me well for a career in teaching. Its Great Books Program asks students to read many of the great works of literature, philosophy, science and math that have influenced Western culture. This curriculum is an excellent foundation for a career in teaching because it not only introduces students to a broad range of subjects, but it teaches how to approach any text—no matter the difficulty—in order to gain insight and understanding from it. I truly delight in tutoring and in the one-on-one camaraderie that is built through the tutor-student relationship. It is a privilege to help students work through areas of frustration and watch how their confidence and initiative can grow through academic support. Most of all, I enjoy helping students cultivate the curiosity and wonder that is part of the learning process. As a doctorate student myself, I know how challenging school can be, but I also know its rewards; I look forward to sharing such rewards with my students.

Q&A

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I received training from Simmons College in Massachusetts to teach in the area of Special Education. Since graduating from St. John's College (which I described above), I have graduated with a master's degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, and I am currently pursuing a PhD from the Graduate Theological Union.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Ever since I have worked at Landmark School, I have been tutoring students while pursuing my own education.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
My students have ranged in ages 4-25. I enjoy working with students of all ages. It is as delightful for me to help a 5-year-old learn her alphabet as it is to help a high school senior finish his college applications.
