Introduction

There's no denying it: the college application process can be very confusing. What has always been a complex process for families, now has extra challenges thanks to both the pandemic and the decision many colleges have made to drop the standardized tests as a requirement. Let us help you navigate the process. We are a small education consulting company made up of three professors, college consultants, and industry professionals who have over 10 years of experience with student writing, college admissions, and knowing what graders for standardized tests look for in essays for the SAT, ACT, GRE and TOEFL exams. Our education backgrounds include Emory University, Columbia University, the University of California Santa Barbara, and the University of Virginia. We enjoy helping students obtain their academic goals, and when they realize that their hard work and dedication is helping them achieve what they've set out to do. Our goal is to help all students who need it at a fair price point that is accessible to all families. We use transparent hourly billing and will never ask you to pay for more services than you need. For the 2024-2025 cycle we have had students get admitted to such schools as:* Georgetown (graduate program), UPenn (graduate program), UMichigan (graduate program), Texas A&M (BSMD program ), Brown University, Cornell University, Boston College, UNC (full scholarship), Emory University, William and Mary, the University of Texas at Austin, University of Florida (Honors), Villanova University, Georgia Tech, Emerson College, Northeastern University, Clemon University (nursing), USF (honors + medical honors program), Florida Atlantic University (honors), University of Central Florida (Honors, Lead Scholars, Medical Honors with scholarship), Nova Southeastern (BSMD program & Premier Program with scholarship), University of Georgia. *particularly competitive/desirable majors or programs are noted. Please contact us for a comprehensive list of all schools.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We have over 2,200 tutoring hours on another tutoring website. We provide a discount for online/remote tutoring and for students who contact us prior to June 2021. Contact us for more information.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
New clients receive a free phone or email consultation for up to 30 minutes to discuss tutoring needs, goals, and lesson structure.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
As the owner of JML Education Consultants, I have a PhD from the University of Virginia, an MA from the University of Virginia and a BA from Emory University. I have 10 years of experience teaching college students, and have taught high school and middle school students as well. I have also worked at a university writing center for five years, and have worked as a grader for companies that grade for the ACT and SAT.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I got started teaching when I pursued my PhD at the University of Virginia. During that time I worked closely with students on their writing skills. As I learned more about student writing I became interested in teaching students how to improve their writing and how to advocate for themselves in their writing for documents such as college admission essays and essays for graduate school.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with all different types of customers and I love meeting new students. I have worked with students who are interested in learning English so that they can converse with their neighbors or with teachers at their children's schools. I have worked with high school students who want to do better in their classes, and need some guidance on the college admission process. I have even worked with students looking to learn or improve their Russian! I love that Houston has so many interesting people to meet and work with.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently worked with a student who wanted to pursue the B.S./M.D. pathway. This is a highly competitive application process (some programs accept just 4 students out of hundreds of applicants!) that grants the student admission to medical school when they get accepted for regular admission. I worked with this student for hours and he was granted interviews for five different programs and received offers from two programs! I was so proud of how much work he put in!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Look at who is doing the consulting and what experience they have in the field. A large company that offers help often uses young, recent graduates who only know their own process. While that can be great for some students, it isn't the best for all students. Work with someone who can tailor the prep work for your student.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
How much time should we invest in college preparatory services, and when should we start? Why should we use preparatory services and what does the professional offer? What is the cost of services and how are we billed? What are the professional's track record, credentials and qualifications? What is our responsibility in the process?
