Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I offer both individual and group lessons. Prices may vary depending on the length of the lessons. I also offer discounts for group lessons.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
First, I like to understand your overall goal and where students currently stand on the subject. Secondly, I like to ask students what they enjoy about learning and if there is a learning method that works best for them. This helps me determine how lessons and materials will be constructed. The curriculum is designed to appeal to the student while keeping them engaged and use their maximum potential. Scheduling is a huge component to the process as well. Please let me know what days and times work for you and I will do my best to accommodate.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I graduated with a double degree in History and Mandarin Chinese from the University of California, Davis in 2017. I was also a student-athlete, so I completely understand the challenges of balancing extra-curricular activities on top of your studies. I also have background in English Literature, Art History, Anthropology, Sociology, Algebra, Geometry, ESL, and Philosophy. I've been tutoring children since 2011, and I currently work with students from Kindergarten to College-Level. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience seeing students improve in their math, reading, writing, and English speaking skills.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started tutoring in high school at a local elementary school, and I volunteered every summer to tutor children in 5th and 6th grade math. In college, I tutored other college freshmen and high school students. Today, I still carry on tutoring Kindergarten-level to collegiate level, using my experience and expertise to help other students achieve their goals, improve their grades, develop good habits, and prepare themselves for standardized testing. Using my experience as a student, athlete, and Chinese-language learner has allowed me to maintain an open-mindset to people of all backgrounds.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I've worked with diverse pool of students, who attend both private and public schools and have different cultural backgrounds and learning abilities/disabilities.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I am fond of the book clubs I've established with various students over the years. Whether it was individual lessons or group lessons, it was incredibly enjoyable sharing new genres and classic novels and presenting reading comprehension questions, major themes, historical/social/political background, and essay topics. Each book would be completed within one month, and overtime, students felt more confident in themselves seeing the long list of books they read, knowing about the authors, and improving their reading and writing skills.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
I think it is important to know what you want out of a tutor and to be realistic with the demands. Cheaper prices do not always guarantee better services. Understand your tutor and look at their tutoring/teaching background. It is also important that the tutor should be open and flexible to your needs realistically. Students should feel comfortable and connected with the tutor they work with.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What do you want the tutor to help you/your child with? (What is the overall goal? What subjects do you want your child to receive help on?) What is your availability like? (How often do you want tutoring to take place? How long would you like each session to be? For how long do you want your child to receive tutoring?) What is the price range you're looking for? (Price should reflect the subject taught, the grade-level of the student, and the time/energy the tutor uses to prepare each lesson and provide expertise.)
