Introduction

I received a 2390 (equivalent to 1580) on the SAT and a 35 on the ACT, and regularly stay up to date as the content and structure of both tests evolve. As a UC Berkeley grad (class of 2018), I can empathize with the struggles that students have with the SAT and ACT! I started my tutoring business in September 2014 and have tutored over 125 students who have experienced, on average, a 25% increase in test scores. I create unique, customizable lesson plans, because I believe no two students learn the same; the plans combine physical and online learning resources in an easy-to-digest manner. Most importantly, I care about my students and understand how to effectively communicate important concepts, along with offering strategies that are proven to work. I enjoy my students! I love to teach, as I believe knowledge is power. With the college landscape becoming more and more competitive, it is important for students to ace the SAT and ACT. I view tutoring as a game; how can I most efficiently communicate key concepts, while ensuring students retain the information? I enjoy meeting and interacting with new people, and seeing the "eureka" moment when a student masters a problem is priceless.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Sessions usually last 1-2 hours, and are $80-$90/hr (depending on location, subjects required, etc.). I offer a free phone or in person consultation to see if it's a good fit before beginning tutoring.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
First, I seek to understand what the student's goals are. Usually these begin with identifying target colleges. From there, I am able to move to a range of SAT/ACT scores that would be a part of an extremely strong application. I run a few diagnostic tests to see the student's current skill level, and then create a customized lesson plan, whether over 5 weeks, 5 months, or something else that best fits the student's learning style.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
SAT- 2270 ACT- 35 International Baccalaureate Diploma from Capuchino High School in San Bruno Recent grad (May 2018) from University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Business Administration

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
In high school I found myself editing many of my peers' essays, along with guiding them through various math and science problems. Via the deluge of requests from my peers, I realized that I was uniquely talented in breaking down layered problems into easily understandable parts.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Over 30 students all across the Bay Area, including those looking to get into Ivy Leagues, UCs, looking for athletic scholarships, etc.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Talk to them first! I've found that tutors and students need to like and respect each other to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Students need to be engaged and trust the tutor in order to learn difficult concepts. Finally, a tutor must understand how the college admissions landscape (and respective tests) are rapidly changing, and should be able to dynamically adjust.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What are my SMART goals? (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Bound) Bad goal: I want to increase my SAT score Good goal: I want to increase my SAT score from 1700 to 2000 within the next six months. How much time do I want to devote to improving per week (this goes beyond just one on one tutoring)?
