Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Because we offer a wide range of services, several factors come into play when we determine how to price and tailor each of our projects based on your specific needs. Elements we consider when pricing a project include (but are not limited to): Pre-Production: -Concept and development -Production Planning Production: -Hiring Actors -Securing Shooting Locations -Equipment Rentals -Crew Size Post Production: -Motion Graphics -Color Grading -Music Selection -Length of Project We encourage you to look over our previous work as a reference as to how we price different types of projects. You’ll see there that our rates typically run between $1,000 to $6,000.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Above all else, we believe in open collaboration with our clients. The first step is always to have an initial meeting either in person or over the phone. This is where we flesh out overall goals for the project and determine what it will take to realize your vision. We emphasize clear communication with our clients and at no point in the production process is this more important than in the beginning. Before the cameras start rolling, we want to establish a clear understanding of what you are going to get out of this process and how we are going to go about providing our services. Your project is completely unique to you and we want to know what’s important to you and what you want to communicate in your video.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Hot Shoe Media began as four friends who bonded over their love of filmmaking. We all attended film school at the University of Alabama where we received a valuable education and honed our craft by applying what we learned in the classroom on countless film sets and commercial projects. Each of us has developed our skills through our own creative endeavors in the production of narrative, commercial, documentary, and feature films. Members of our team have been a part of Emmy nominated and other award winning projects and productions. Nothing has been more beneficial in our education than the past five years of collaboration between us. We push each other to work harder and to become better filmmakers.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Each member of Hot Shoe Media shares a lifelong passion for filmmaking and storytelling. It was a fortunate turn of fate that led all of us to the University of Alabama, where we quickly discovered that the four of us worked extremely well with each other. We spent four years constantly collaborating together on film sets and on our own projects. By the time we were set to graduate, we realized that our best work and fondest memories came from us working together and that we could continue our partnership outside of school. This led to us moving to Atlanta, GA and the creation of Hot Shoe Media, where we direct that same passion for filmmaking and storytelling into the productions of our clients.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
From our work with large corporations like Nissan, Admit.me, and Saint-Gobain to small businesses, independent musicians, and Kickstarter campaigns; we feel no client or project is too big or too small. While Atlanta is home for Hot Shoe Media, our client base expands nationwide as we are comfortable traveling across the country to accommodate clients in different states. No matter the size of the project, we are confident that our workflow is adaptable to any client’s demands.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
One project we are especially proud of is our work with Mobitrike, a motorized tricycle company who came to us with unique production needs. They required an assembly video of their product as well as two separate commercials for the different models of the trike. We independently conceptualized and produced the three videos within a four week period while working closely with the client to ensure their satisfaction. At the end of the production, we were very pleased with the quality and diversity of the work we had done and even more pleased that we were able to suit all of our client’s needs.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Nothing says more about the quality of a production company than their previous work. We encourage you to look at the portfolios of the service providers you are considering as those are the most accurate depictions of what they are capable of. Make sure that the candidate is not only open to collaboration, but that they encourage it. This is YOUR project, you should have the largest influence in how your vision is produced. Without a collaborative spirit, the process is miserable for everyone involved. Also look for how services are priced in relation to their quality and the competing market. You shouldn’t have to pay a premium price for sub-par work. Make sure that whoever you choose to produce your project puts an emphasis on both quality and value. If you ask questions that address these topics, you are all but guaranteed a satisfactory experience by the time you have chosen a candidate.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
You have to be able to look at your options and then ask yourself, "How much your video communication is worth to you?" Video has proven time and time again to be the most powerful, far-reaching communication tool for businesses and organizations. A well made video can be the catalyst for reaching a new market, training your employees, or simply communicating your values. Understanding exactly what you want and how much it’s worth to you is the best way to navigate the freelance video production market.
