Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
These are my rates for videos: $1500 for a half day shoot (1-4 hours) + 1-2 min edit $2500 for a full day shoot (4-8 hours) + 2-5 min edit

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
1) I find out about the company, company history, company culture, etc. 2) I ask for pictures of the filming location, or if budget allows for it, I do a location scout. 3) I'll send over the questions to the interviewees so they can take a look at them before the filming date. 4) I'll film the interviews and the b-roll at the locations, typically doing the interviews first. 5) I'll edit the video with a song choice and ask for feedback form the client. This is usually within 2 weeks of the filming date. 6) I finalize the edit. I can give the client the master file after they have approved it. This is usually 3-4 weeks after the filming date.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a Bachelor's degree in Film Production from Webster University. I have been doing professional video work for over 17 years.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I went to film school and my first job after college was working for a local video production house.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I've done work for hundreds of small businesses, also larger brands such as Ameriprise Financial, Bath Fitter, The Discovery Channel, Easterseals, Fox Business Channel, Island/Def Jam Records, Monsanto, The National Guard, NBC Sports, Nestle/Purina, and Sports Illustrated to name a few.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
The "CertaPro Painters Indianapolis" video that is on my Thumbtack media gallery is one video that I'm fond of. This particular video took about 8 hours to shoot and about 12 hours to edit. I think it's a good representation of what I can do with an 8 hour shoot.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Ask to see some work that they did everything on (directing, shooting, audio, editing). Changes in the video production industry has really forced people to be "Jacks/Jills of all trades". I'm assuming that most people are looking for "one man bands" and not a 3-4 person production team if they are looking on this site. Make sure that the samples that you are seeing are ones that represent what that person can do by themselves, not with 2-3 other people helping them.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1) What type of video do I want/need? 2) What am I trying to accomplish with this video? 3) Where am I going to put this video? Website, YouTube, Facebook Business Page, etc? 4) Is there a video that is similar to what I'd like to do? (one that looks like it was done in my budget range) 5) Is this person (employee or customer) the best person to speak on camera about my company? They don't have to be great orators and supermodels at the same time, but just keep in mind how their communication skills and how they might look on camera when selecting an interviewee.
