Examples of Paul’s television credits include a documentary he produced & directed on Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (all Michigan PBS stations), and a segment he produced & directed for WTTW’s (PBS Chicago) ArtBeat. He also produced meetings and shows for DaimlerChrysler and Federal Mogul. He wrote/produced/directed/edited Business Matters, a monthly cable program that documents Michigan success stories (Eaton, Lear), as well as a series of concert videos (Arturo Sandoval, John McCutcheon). What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I can usually work with any size budget. Here are some basic budget components: Experienced camera operators with HD or DSLR camera, sound and lights - $650/day $450 half day Producer Day Rate: $350 for 8 hours $425 for 10 hours Hourly: $50 Editing: $50/hour on my Final Cut Pro system or $350 for 8 hours. Production Package: Prices vary with the crew and equipment.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I generally speak with a new customer to learn about their goals and other needs. Then I prepare a quote that reflects my recommendations. Often I will provide two quotes to show how different specifications will effect the price.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have 20+ years of experience as a professional writer, producer, director, editor. Education: University of Michigan, Bachelor of General Studies – Communications

How did you get started doing this type of work?

At the University of Michigan, I took a variety of film, and television courses. In unrelated courses (business, science, natural resources, etc.) I would submit videos in addition to papers. I was fortunate to be hired by a film production company in Birmingham, Michigan soon after graduating.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

My work with sports teams and organizations are always enjoyable. I've worked with a variety of pro and college teams. I also enjoy music productions, and I've worked with a variety of musicians from folk, blues to jazz. My production for Google was intriguing. It was fascinating to see inside this secretive and incredible organization. A typical production takes 6 to 8 weeks to develop a script, preproduce, shoot, post produce, edit, revise and release. However, I can also turn our a video in one day, if the deadline is tight.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

ORDINARY vs. EXTRAORDINARY Budgeting a video is a little like developing a budget for building a new house. You can add many options and upgrades to enhance a basic house. The important question is, what will meet your objective? There are times when a basic video is all that's needed, but when budgeting for a basic video you need to guard against creating something embarrassingly unprofessional and/or boring. On the other hand, you need to guard against spending more than is needed to get the desired audience response. Just as with a logo, business cards or brochures, an organization's image is an important consideration. Most of us are discriminating television viewers and we'll quickly change the channel away from substandard programming. One method of determining an appropriate budget is to work backwards, beginning with the audience. How many people will view the video, and what is reasonable to spend on each viewer. Some of your budget should be devoted to attracting people to see your video. Our budgets provide options to scale up or down the production values, specifications and costs. The level of experience on the production team is often as important as any of the technical specifications. We can usually tailor the budget and specification to target a price that fits your needs.
