What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I tend to price out my work on a per-project basis. But generally, my shooting rates are $75/hr with a $500 gear fee that includes 2-3 cameras, lenses, lights, mics, and some travel. I do travel nationally and internationally for work and my day rates vary depending on needs. Editing is also $75/hr, and my final edits always include color correction, audio mastering, and music edited (Note: stock music purchase is a client-cost).

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

My work usually starts with a conversation about a potential client's hopes and expectations for a video. Then I ask a lot of questions, share my perspective from my experience with video, and we lay out a schedule and game plan for production!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I got a degree in advertising from Washington State University in 2008. I moved to Spokane in 2011 and immediately started work on a feature length doc about Haiti. In 2013 I joined a student travel company as an in-house videographer, and in 2015 I went freelance.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I've wanted to do video production since high school. I went to college for advertising because I wanted a degree with a name employers and clients would recognize. When we moved to Spokane I pursued it full time by work on the documentary while also seeking client projects.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I've worked on several Kickstarters, other small businesses that need more visibility, arts organizations, churches, and larger corporate clients.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

For Zaycon Fresh I edited video from 30+ interviews of every employee in the company. They just told me to making something good! The final product did a great job of giving the company some personality and giving an outside view of how they treat their employees and customers.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Always make sure your videographer knows what they're doing. There's tons of talent in this area, but it's easy to be fooled by someone with a nice camera and a big lens. Everyone's on Facebook, Instagram, and probably has a website. Take a few minutes to make sure their stuff is what you're looking for before you spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a project.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

One thing I always ask my clients to do is send links to other videos they like, and explain why they like them. That gives me a good reference for expectations, and makes it more accessible for people I'm working with,
