Introduction

Allison provides: -Vocal lessons (modern & classical) -Piano Lessons (classical & chords) -Various classes & coaching including theory, songwriting, & acting, mommy and me. I can train any style and am always looking to learn more. If you have a question I can’t answer, I will direct you to the resources or find a answer for you. I know how to train pop/rock voices and belting for musical theater. I am certified in the Lovetri Method and going through additional certifications with NYSTA. Also have gone through Estill training. I have training in counseling, anatomy, vocal injuries, acoustics and sound for singing, acting, songwriting, wellness, and child development. Though my degree is in opera, my passion lies with commercial styles such as pop, country, R&B, and jazz. You can find my students at local high schools, gigging around California, community theaters, and auditioning for colleges (successfully!) around the nation.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

The first lesson is about getting to know you, your background, your goals, and then assessing the skills you already have. I also listen for any potential damage or problem spots in the voice. After I have a good feeling about where you are, I have a general plan of where we’re going and how we’re going to get there. The following lessons are about learning and executing various vocal tasks & technique including control of vocal anatomy, breath control, warming up, music reading (if desired), and repertoire work. By the end of your 2nd lesson, you'll know about breath and how to warm up.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Yes! I have my bachelor's degree in Vocal peformance, focusing on opera and classical styles. I got certified in teaching Somatic Voicework in 2013. This is a 3 class, graduate level vocal pedagogy course focusing on teaching styles such as rock, pop, gospel,jazz, blues, and folk! It enables me to teach in these styles and have the credentials behind my name (Not just my experience) to do it! I'm also finishing up training in the Estill Voice Method and have various voice anatomy classes behind me. Other course I’ve taken include: -18 undergraduate units in child development -9 graduate credits in counseling -Anatomy/Physiology of the Voice -Wellness Practices for Singers -Vocal Resonance & Acoustics -Vocal Injuries & Habilitation for Singers -Development & Aging of the Voice

How did you get started doing this type of work?

The honest truth: I never wanted to be a singing teacher- though I had my degree in singing. I loved performing, but felt uncertain about teaching. In 2013 I was going through some medical issues, needed extra income so this started as a side hustle.…BUT the universe/God had other plans for me! Within 3 months, I had almost a full roster of students with no marketing! I was able to quit my desk job and made it my full time job. I found I absolutely loved teaching and have never looked back. I’ve been teaching now for 10 years and hope to continue the rest of my life. I love this work. I love my students. It is so fulfilling to me and I am so lucky to be able to teach and connect with so many wonderful people!

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

1. I was asked to design a high school singing elective course and teach it to a local charter school. I really loved designing it and working with the students. I loved watching the student grow and watching them make technical connections to their singing that helped them improve. (2022-2023) 2. In 2021 I was asked to improve the vocals and harmonies of Valley Christian Center’s worship teams. It was a blast! I loved working with the singers, helping them hear the harmonies, and teaching them wellness practices to help with early morning singing. I learned how to use in-ear monitors and managing personal sound equipment and also helped with balancing the sound levels.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure to check the credentials of a music teacher you're hiring. There are a lot of teachers who claim to be able to give you great skills, but could be scamming you. Look at they're actual performing experience and how many years they too lessons. A huge indicator- Ask why the diaphragm isn't that important to singing. If they insist it is....well, they might not be the teacher for you.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Voice training (and piano) is a commitment. Without that commitment- to the process and practicing- you cannot grow. Some questions to ask yourself... Do you have time to practice, realistically? Will I stick with this for over a month? What are my goals as a singer? Is this a hobby or am I going to audition for a show? How will this benefit me? What am I looking for in a teacher? What styles am I wanting to sing? Does this teacher suit my stylistic needs? Does this teacher have experience teaching my style? Is your teacher flexible with scheduling? What is my budget for lessons?
