Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I have several pricing options for students depending on whether they choose weekly or biweekly lessons, and I also offer 30-, 45-, and 60-minute sessions to allow for greater flexibility for my students. Lessons are charged on a monthly basis, and the following rates apply: For a single lesson, the pricing is as follows: 30-minute lesson - $70 45-minute lesson - $100 60-minute lesson - $130 For 2 lessons per month, the monthly price is as follows: 30-minute lessons: $120 45-minute lessons: $160 60-minute lessons: $200 For 1 lesson per week, the monthly price is as follows: 30-minute lessons - $200 45-minute lessons - $270 60-minute lessons - $340 Payment is due at or before the time of the first lesson of every month. Students who have weekly lessons pay a lower per-lesson rate because they are reserving and committing to a regular lesson time.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When I meet with a new student for their first lesson, my process involves finding out what the student's goals and objectives are, as well as asking questions about what the student enjoys. Healthy technique can be applied to any style of singing. My students have the best results when they sing what they love! I also present the basics of healthy vocal technique, which involves breath support, vocal exercises, and understanding how the voice works.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Wyoming, where I graduated with Honors for my research in vocal pedagogy. As a professional singer, I lived abroad in Brazil for several years, during which time I worked with classical music professionals from Brazil, Italy, France, and the U.S. in both academic and professional settings, where I built real-world experience which I find invaluable for teaching my own private students. I also specialize in contemporary belting technique for musical theater, pop, rock, and jazz students who wish to follow this path. As a crossover singer myself, I understand the crucial differences between classical and pop singing and apply this accordingly to my students based on their singing goals. Many of my students also learn to cross over into various styles as well.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started teaching private lessons about 14 years ago, about the same time I started singing professionally. Teaching and performing have always gone hand in hand for me; in my opinion, they are both vital parts of being a well-rounded musician. Since music has the power to touch both hearts and minds, whether I am onstage or in the teaching studio, my ultimate goal is to be a part of enriching people's lives through music.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with many different types of students, from young children just starting out, to professionals of all ages, to adults who want a lifelong hobby to enjoy, as well as students preparing for college and summer music programs.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I wouldn't say I have a favorite recent "project," but what I enjoy most about teaching is when a student of mine sings a new high note or suddenly understands a new aspect of vocal technique, and their eyes light up and they say, "now it's so easy!"

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
My advice to customers looking for voice lessons is this: technique is SO important! Everyone who wants lessons probably already enjoys singing, and anyone can play you a few notes and "warm up" the voice, but if you want to maintain a healthy sound for years to come, then technique matters! No one would conceive of a ballerina performing advanced maneuvers without the proper training, and it is the same with singing.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Anyone who wants voice lessons should think about their goals: what parts of singing are difficult for them, and where do they see themselves in 6 months, 1 year, 3 years? If there are professional singers whom they admire, this can also be helpful for creating an idea of what styles of singing they enjoy and would like to pursue. And the last and perhaps the most important thing: Are you ready? Are you ready to sing the way you've always dreamed?
