Introduction

As an active professional singer in New York City and around the world, (Opera, Oratorio, as a soloist, as a choral singer, and as a choral conductor) I have served as a voice teacher to countless students for over 30 years. Several of my students have gone on to have active professional singing careers (classical and non-classical), including The Metropolitan Opera (where I also occasionally sing with the chorus) to non-traditional positions with Disney, pop and rock bands, and other audition/competition-based entities. I have been teacher to young students, older amateurs, and professional colleagues. I love singing, and I love helping those who also love singing to renew and improve doing what they love. Bringing my own joy for the art of vocal performance and expertise as a performer and interpreter to adults as well as younger students and even beginners helps me make a difference in the world.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Lessons are $80 per hour. I do prefer this format, but can consider cases where a 1/2 hour ($50) or 45 minutes ($65) may be more appropriate.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

It is best to have a quick phone call or email exchange to discuss all the particulars, then a preliminary lesson is scheduled to see whether all parties are comfortable, and to see if I am the right fit for you or your young student.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In addition to my education, a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from Pacific Lutheran University, as well as a having my tuition paid as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (teaching voice and conducting) at Portland State University, in Grad school, I have been both an active professional singer and a voice teacher for over 30 years. I have also been very fortunate to study voice lessons myself with several exceptional teachers.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

Not all professional singers teach voice, but it is a very common addition to our careers. I actually started working with colleagues in high school as section leader, and then really enjoyed teaching voice lessons while getting my education. It has always accompanied (pun intended) my singing career.

What types of customers have you worked with?

From teaching in undergrad and grad school, and teaching young changing voices at the Cathedral Choir School in Salt Lake City Utah, to advanced amateurs of all ages, to teaching lessons to professional colleagues whom I met while singing together, I have truly taught all levels, beginners to active pros. One of my students still sings at The Metropolitan Opera, in NY as well as several former students who continue to make their career singing in choirs or opera houses all over the world.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

Helping prepare a young singer this year for a big solo on Christmas Eve, and getting a text from one of her soprano colleagues who also studies with me that she "crushed it!" was a wonderful experience.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

While trusting a voice teacher is important, you also have to have a good fit, and trust your own instincts. The best way to select a voice teacher is to have a lesson, and decide if the fit is, or will be right.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Singing lessons are a process. No student figures it all out, and no teacher "fixes" everything, or teaches everything in a few lessons. Some students study with the same teacher (whose ears and guidance they trust) for years, to maintain the good work they have accomplished together.
