Introduction

*BASED IN NYC. Lessons in person or online* *NOT a classical singing teacher.* *Author of “How To Sing Without Thinking.”* I teach contemporary singing. I specialize in helping singers find and hone their unique voice. I am not about gimmicks, tricks, or false promises. I guide you into singing with minimal strain, developing vocal power, expanding range, and drastically improving your tone. I think of the voice like the body; the more precisely you exercise (vocalize), the stronger (more powerful), more flexible (more range) and more fit (better tone) you get. One of the best perks is that once you get vocally fit, you become confident and not self-conscious about your singing. Just like when you are physically fit, you feel much better about the way you look. When you are vocally fit, you feel much better about the way you sound. I specialize in pop, rock, R&B, gospel, jazz, musical theater, country, metal, and all singing styles that use a microphone. I work with adults and teenagers over 14 with good attention spans and high motivation. Let’s get you vocally fit and comfortable so you can sing with security and pride!

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The first thing I like to do is find out my student’s “Why.” The clearer we both are on *why* you want to train your voice and what your connection, goals and intentions with singing are, the easier it is to make progress. Clarity and communication are very important. Then I walk you through some custom diagnostic vocal exercises to assess your strengths and weaknesses and determine what exercises would be best to focus on to take your singing to the next level. I work in a very intuitive, yet methodic way. I also enjoy educating the student on how the voice works, but only as much or as little as they are interested in. The most important aspects of lessons is the environment of support and encouragement along with the actual vocalizing (vocal exercising).

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater and I focused most of my education on voice. I took singing lessons every semester, both in college (the traditional classical curriculum) and out of college (pop, rock, R&B, jazz and contemporary singing). I have studied and continue to study voice with over a dozen renowned contemporary voice teachers, both privately and in group sessions, workshops and master classes. I have vocalized thousands of hours and continue to study and hone my craft on a daily basis. The college degree was just the beginning of my education and training. I never stop learning about the voice and singing.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Singing has been my primary passion since I was a child. Once I discovered I could study voice, I became hooked and went down the rabbit hole of all things singing. I started writing on a singing forum in the early 2000’s and began teaching once I graduated college.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I work with singers of all levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced), professionals and amateurs. I do not work with children under the age of 14.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
There’s not a specific one. I have two favorite common experiences in lessons with me. One is the beginner “shy” person that I gradually and gently (yet firmly) guide into singing in a way they never thought they would be able to. When they hear the amount of power, clarity and passion their voice can generate and they make that signature face of shock and amazement, I secretly hold back tears of joy every single time! The other is the experienced singer who is shocked by what can happen when they let go of all of their technique (or as I call them “insurances”) and exclaim “that’s so much easier!” To which I usually respond “Yup!” Experienced singers tend to really appreciate the newfound level of presence, fearlessness and immediacy I guide them into. And I love it!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Finding a voice teacher that is a good fit is not always easy. Do your best to find a teacher that has a good understanding of the type of music you like to sing. For example, do not hire a classical or bel canto singing coach if you want to sing pop music, or viceversa. There’s a myth that goes “If you can sing classical, you can sing anything.” It’s not true. Find a teacher that gets the genre you love to sing and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions!

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Who are some of my favorite singers? How do I want to sound? Why do I want to train my voice? What do I want to improve about my singing? When did I first fall in love with singing?
