How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My very first student was myself! At the age of 6 l started taking piano lessons. It wasn’t easy finding a piano teacher that worked well with students who had ADD back then. So after trying out many different teachers and seeing the same teaching method over and over again. Playing songs assigned to me that I had little to no interest in made piano no longer fun for me. So I told my mother “I want to learn my favorite’s songs and nobody will teach them to me.” So I began to teacher myself. With very basic knowledge in music theory it made things difficult at first but then I learned that I could learn my favorite songs just by listening to them. I would sit at the piano for what felt like hours with one ear focusing on the song and the other matching the note on the piano. In school I felt discourage about my intelligence (which later discovered was due to my reading/learning disability) so I was very insecure about my ability to be as smart as the other kids, BUT music changed that for me. When I decided to go to College and get my degree in music I still wasn’t sure what I was going to do with music. All I knew is THIS is what I am good at and THIS is what I should be doing. I never aimed to be famous nor tried to be. I just had a passion for music and who music made me become. Music gave me strength, confidence, motivation and most of all it gave me hope. It made me feel like I could finally be proud of who I was, and I could stand amongst friends who were Professors, Doctors, or Engineers and feel confident in my own individual intelligence. No, I cannot do what an engineer can nor, will I be conducting open heart surgery but when talking with the doctor, engineer, and professor they said something that was most shocking to me. They were actual envious of me....me? One said they can barely keep a beat, the other could sing on key to save his life, and well the doctor said he does have the patients to learn an instrument (no pun intended). So, to FINALLY answer the question, I knew right there | wanted to teach music because I never want anyone to feel the way I did. I want reach as many people like myself as I can to tell them you CAN be smart, and you CAN be something great. I have taught music and more. No matter what student crosses my path I will always encourage then to think outside the box, express their creativity, and never be fearful of those who doubt them. Each student that I have personally seen grow in confidence or skill has made my choice to become a teacher a very easy one indeed.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Always check their background such as education and reviews. A few of professional instructors, including myself, have noticed there are a lot of good piano players out there who think they can be Voice teachers and a lot of guitar teachers who don’t know a lot of Music theory. Make sure when you are paying for the best you get the best. It’s important to receive for quality instruction. Find an instruct like myself and a few others I know of, that cares more about the student learning than how much we get paid for the month... yes we all have bills to pay but you can always notice the ones who are invested in the importance of the “teaching” aspect of music.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
“What are my goals?” “Can I afford this (time/fiancees)” “What do I want to get out of these lessons?” “Do I have time to practice in between lessons?” “How committed am I?” “Do I want music to be my hobby or my career?” “Is my favorite style of music what I really want to learn how to perform?”
