Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
$25 registration fee, monthly tuition, 30 day notice for quitting, pay per lesson at higher rate

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The first lesson is always free. We get to know one another, discuss previous experience and future goals.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a bachelor's degree in music and over 15 years teaching private music lessons. I have experience working with students on the spectrum as well as students with speech challenges. I have seen great success with my methods.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I have always loved singing. I started playing the flute at age 9. My father has always and is still currently in a band. Music makes me feel complete. I cannot imagine life without music.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with all ages and abilities including some with special needs.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
One of my favorite clients was a neighbor that had a daughter with major speech delays. I have no special training in speech pathology therapy, but I agreed to teach her. In just a few months her airflow had increased 500%. Her speech therapist was impressed with what had been accomplished. I was just teaching her correct singing and breathing technique and having fun teaching her to sing. Several years later, she was chosen to be the soloist in the junior high choir concert.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Find a teacher that you mesh with. Connecting with a music teacher is really important for the students. It can take weeks or maybe a couple of months, but students will not stick with it if they don't like the teacher.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Why do you want to take lessons? Confidence? Fun? Competition? Find out what training the teacher has had. Some teachers are great performers but not great teachers and vice versa. Teachers with years of playing may not be as good as a teacher with a music degree. Ask yourself what your priorities are, look for reviews and referrals. Meet the teacher to see how you feel. Are they organized? Timely? Pushy? Are there recitals and other performance opportunities?
