Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Our pricing is something we take pride in when it comes to our industry. We offer fair pricing on our projects that doesn't variate from town to town nor does it spike during our busy seasons. We are always flexible to help the needs of the customer but our intent isn't to start high and work you down like many companies with hired hard salesmen tend to do. We do offer a 5% discount on all of your jobs for cash payment.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We like to contact the customer and have a brief phone conversation detailing the predicament they are experiencing. From there, if we believe it's something we can help solve, we set up a free consultation home visit with the customer to have either Rob or Tyler out to diagnose the issue. We discuss in detail our product and how we intend to stop water infiltration and then within a few days we e-mail out a work order/contract to be reviewed by the customer, typically with a diagram showing the scope of the work if it's anything beyond a basic system and pump install. We do not ask for a down payment, only a signature on the contract e-mail or mailed back to us and we ask for payment upon completion. Our work comes with a lifetime and transferable warranty on the process. If at any point water enters where we installed our drainage system, we will return to remedy the issue until it is perfected.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Our industry does not require any form of apprenticeships or certifications pertaining to actual basement drainage. For this reason, it is most important to rely on a company that has a long term experience solving basement and yard drainage issues. Rob physically installed drainage systems and sump pumps for 30 years and Tyler did the same for 10 years and still works on repairs and sump pump installations. We now have a crew that has been with us for over 10 years and is responsible for all of our work in that time frame. Our experience is time tested and our knowledge is second to none.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Rob began in the industry in 1979 working on a crew. Shortly there after he got his own truck, became a foreman, and officially started Coulter Systems in 1983. Along the way Rob took detailed notes of what worked in the industry and what does not work and has perfected the drainage system we install without excess cost to the customer with add ons that don't work and only complicate the system. The key to have a drainage system work properly is knowing the small finite details of proper water drainage as well as understanding the point of derivation for the leak in question. We have that knowledge and have been offering it at a fair price for over 35 years.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We work with customers ranging from residential town homes, apartments, and single family homeowners to owners of large manufacturing buildings or complexes. We even installed a drainage system in a storage facility that sat over 20 feet underground. If it's a structure taking on ground water, we can fix it.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
To show the scope of our knowledge, we'd like to share with you one of the more peculiar projects we took on that has now been working for over 2 years. Any basement or home that we have entered many have it tricks and turns, but by and large they are all similar to one another. In this particular case, a gentleman had gone throw 4 different pool liners from water erosion piecing away at his under ground pool. He had several contractors attempt to alleviate the ground water causing the inevitable destruction of his pool liners and thus had to replace the liner every time. Rob and Tyler determined that due to the rock heavy ground that is notorious for the area, along with the lake presence, that an underground pocket of water was being formed underneath the customers underground pool during heavy rains. We proposed to dig down to several feet below the bottom of the customers pool until we found the underground water pocket. Once we dug deep enough, roughly 9 feet, we punctured the water pocket causing the liners to fail. We then installed 2 high powered sump pumps at the bottom of the hole to ensure that the water would no longer be able to reach the height needed to affect his pool liner again. This project took us 3 days to complete and is still working to perfection.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Make sure that you get multiple bids, ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable that the process will work, trust your common sense, and most importantly, do not sign a contract with a salesmen that is pressuring you above and beyond into doing so. Much of our industry has talented, high pressure salesmen that will try to force you into a decision using scare tactics and bully sales practices. Every month we end up talking to someone who cancels our appointment because they have already signed with a company only to find out from us that our price is sometimes 50% less than what they have signed for. This is not because we install a lesser product or work faster than they do, we just simply offer our systems at a fair price with no intent to price gouge.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Most importantly, how long have you lived at the current structure? That is always one of our first questions because our best resource to diagnosing the issue you have is finding out first hand from the customer what they have and have not experienced. If you have lived at the structure for 10 years and only have water entering in one spot, then that's more than likely the only area that needs to be addressed. This can sometimes save you thousands of dollars by only having a partial system installed instead of a full perimeter which many of our competitors suggest to install at every job site. Other questions to ask yourself are; Is water entering the basement during rains or all of the time? If it's entering during dry times it's probably a issue with your plumbing or sewer lines. Are you planning on finishing your basement? If the answer is yes and you have lived at the structure for less than 5 years it is a worthy investment to have a drainage system installed first, because if water enters after you finish, the clean up expense alone sometimes exceeds what it costs to have our systems installed before hand. Are you prepared to spend at least $4,000.00 to have this situation remedied? In almost all cases, a drainage system is required to eliminate water infiltration into a structure. There are no quick fixes such as sealant or barriers. Once the water begins entering the structure it has established a lifetime underground rivulet that will continue to feed, and the only remedy is to drain the water as it arrives.
