Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
For strolling magic and formal close-up shows, I have a standard one hour or two hour fee. Different time frames are quoted as needed. I also have several wedding packages depending on if you just need reception entertainment or you would also like some entertainment during the rehearsal dinner and/or bachelor and bachelorette parties. Customized presentations requiring the creation of new magic are also quoted as needed. There is also a small mileage fee for travel outside of a 30 mile radius of Huntsville, AL.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
After I have confirmed that I am available for the date in question, ask the client what is the nature of their event and about how many guest they are expecting. Then, I get an idea of what their expectations for entertainment are to make sure that what I do is a good fit. If they are local and have not seen me perform before, we can arrange a quick face to face meeting.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I am a long standing member of both The Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Also, several years experience in community theater as an actor, member of tech crew and assistant director of major productions.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started seriously studying magic in high school. Growing up in Southern California afforded me the opportunity to join a Boy Scout Explorer post dedicated to magic and associated with a Society of American Magicians museum. This formal mentoring program contributed immensely to my theatrical and magical education. Shortly after moving to Huntsville, I started performing magic in restaurants.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I continue to work regularly with restaurant clients, helping them grow and maintain their customer base and generate unique word of mouth advertising for their establishment. I have also worked for corporate clients providing entertainment for holiday parties and employee picnics as well as charity events, churches and other organizations. Individual clients hire me for wedding receptions and private parties.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently was hired to provide entertainment for a company holiday party. Their theme was "Old Time Christmas". I was able to rent an appropriate Dickens era costume that the client approved of. Then, I spent a week researching period magic and purchasing materials for some new props. Script writing and rehearsal took about another week. In the end, by client was amazed and entertained by my magic but she was even happier with how I fit the theme of the party. That was the first time I actually performed in a top hat!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Make sure that the type of magic you are getting is appropriate for the event and the venue. Most magicians specialize in a particular kind of performance. There are children's performers, stage magicians, illusionists, mentalists/psychic entertainers, comedy magicians, and close-up performers (like myself). Very few magicians excel in multiple fields. You want to make sure that you are getting an entertainer that best matches your needs and expectations.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Ask how long the magician has been performing. Did they study under a mentor? Do they belong to any of the major magic organizations? Do they have any background in theater and allied arts? You want don't want to hire someone that just learned some tricks off of You Tube and is calling themselves a "professional".
