What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My pricing is based on a few factors such as distance to travel, materials, and type of show expected (i.e. stage show, close-up, walk-around)

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

When working with a new customer, I enjoy finding out more about the event that they're hosting. Is it a big corporate party of 200+ people? Is it a small cocktail hour? I like to know the dress code so that not only will my style match what the group but my color coordination can match the theme. I like to know if there's an honoree (like if it's someone's birthday) or VIP that the host would like to play to. I like to know more about the event space and how much room there is to play in addition to the schedule for the night so that we can coordinate when and where to be. When working with a new client, I like to reassure them that the performance is about the event, not me, and I'll do my best to make sure that it's conveyed. I show up earlier than my call time is to make sure things are in order and help where I can.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Although there is no magic "school," I have had the opportunity to work with and be mentored by some big names in the industry to help me develop the skills I have.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I grew up playing cards and bringing smiles to peoples' faces. The magic I saw at the time was full of suave magicians on the stage, which never really fit what I did. I worked at my own style and presentation and soon word spread in my local area. I began getting hired for larger and larger events.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I have worked with major corporations as well as nonprofits, from California State University Fullerton for a large show to a private walk-around cocktail hour with 7 Day Hero. I've worked in a bar doing magic for all the customers sitting at the bar and I've worked for churches at their staff events.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I have recently worked with 7 Day Hero, a non-profit for a fundraiser. This event had been 5 months in the works and I worked with the event coordinator on making the event personalized and I had developed a special card effect just for their group.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Ask what their show includes and how well it would work with their theme or actual event. If doing a trade show, a close-up or parlor magician may be better for the event than a stage magician. Don't be afraid to ask for the details in the show and what kind of things they do. Do they read minds? Are they solely card mechanics? It all matters.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Cost versus quality is a major factor. Also, how personal the magician can be.
