Introduction

I tailor my act to the needs of the client. I don't perform the same things the same way for all occasions, with special material better suited to the sorts of event at which I perform. My magic fills spaces from small back rooms to a full stage. While I perform close-up magic and what you might have heard of as "mentalism", what I really call my specialty is using magic to augment an event, not dominate it. You want to hire a magician for your private event because magic makes parties more fun. Any magician can do tricks at a party, but I know as much about how parties work as I do about card magic and mind-reading. I spent years perfecting my craft as a magician, but I spent just as much time learning how a large event like a wedding is organized. Your guests are there to socialize and have a good time. I keep them from noticing when the kitchen is behind some other example of Murphy's law. I'll do something special for your VIPs, guests with disabilities or impairments like deafness that could mean they won't experience magic like everyone else does. I'm there to improve the party, not BE the party. Whether that means inviting some people away from an over-crowded bar, or distracting a drunk guest who is hitting on your hired help, or introducing wallflowers with an icebreaker they will never forget, I'm here to make your guests happy. I'm not a budget magician, but I can assure you that if you hire me, you will get what you pay for. A quick note about Covid-19: From the beginning of the pandemic in New York, I had to change my act to suit social distancing norms and the inability for people to see my mouth due to the presence of a mask(it helps some people to understand if they are hard of hearing). My demo reel was made in 2019. In July of 2020, when the virus was around but people were still having cautious gatherings with social distancing and masks, I performed at a party where I was told everyone would be masked and social distancing. They were not. Bear in mind, this is long before the vaccine, but there were overflow trailers at the morgue down the street from me in Manhattan. I went ahead with my "safe" act, and as a result, I got my one bad review. TLDR: if there's an uptick in infections, I'm going to stick by the medical guidelines for my show, to keep it safe. Please respect that.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
It really depends on the job. If I'm just performing for an hour in a cocktail party in New York, so no travel is involved, it'd be $500 for the hour. If I had to travel I'd have to consider how far (I've had to cross the Atlantic for gigs) and how long I'd be needed to perform. Then, I'd need to take the means of my client into account. If I were travelling far enough, I'd probably negotiate a package by which my client would be incentivized to use me for longer than an hour or two, just so they could get more value from hiring me.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I'm constantly reading both new material and the classics, I meet with two groups of magicians each week to trade ideas and secrets, I attend lectures and conventions, and I'm always rereading the classics.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My father is an amateur magician, and when I was in my early twenties I was in Europe, and found that performing magic got me free drinks, free meals, and useful contacts. Soon thereafter, I began doing it for money.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Performing strolling magic at cocktail parties in Manhattan lofts. For that setting I usually do some old fashioned mind reading effects like drawing duplication, psychic Q&A and psychometry. At a barbecue I might bring a box of silverware to bend like crazy.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I was performing at a birthday party for a young finance guy and his best friend got very drunk and began making untoward advances on the sister of the guest of honor. I occupied him for a couple minutes while the host decided if they needed to have him physically removed. Fifteen minutes later, he was poured into a cab and sent home.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Hire the right specialist for your event. If you had a liver problem, would you go to a doctor for all occasions? If you want a magician for a kids party, hire a kids magician. If you want magic for grown ups, hire me.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
The simplest magic effect can take literally years to learn to the point of being able to perform.
