Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
There is a flat rate for all lessons at Point Breeze Piano and an added travel fee for In-Home lessons. The travel fee is based solely on your distance from Point Breeze Piano.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, with a concentration in Piano, from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Class of 2013. I've studied with Tom Lawton and Don Glanden (students of the great French pianist Bernard Peiffer), Trudy Pitts (contemporary of John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner among many others), and Gary Moran (student of pianist Barry Harris). I've had lots of other great teachers but these mentioned stick out to me.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started teaching kids in the neighborhood for pretty cheap before I was in high school. Since then I’ve gotten a Bachelors of Music degree and performed pretty extensively with some reputable people and organizations. I’ve also taught privately for myself and for private schools, and given clinics and masterclasses to military bands and college bands in improvising jazz and the piano’s role in a variety of ensembles, including the jazz big band. I’ve been teaching professionally since 2012.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
As far as teaching one-on-one lessons goes, I've had Students ranged from age 4-82. I've had a 5-year-old Student who could read and write in 3 languages, to Students who have diagnosed learning disabilities. AND everything in between. As far as young children under 6 and adults over 65, the only really physical requirements are that you can sit up straight for 30 minutes, use a pair of scissors, and be able to write your name. You won't need to do the last two, but if you have the motor skills necessary to complete those actions, you should be able to play the piano.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
The Greater Philadelphia region is SATURATED with world-class musicians. It would be my guess that 95% of them teach privately. That is, they’ll take Students into their homes for weekly lessons - usually on recommendations from other Students or teachers. Much less of them are actually willing to leave their homes to teach. At Point Breeze Piano you can have it either way. Your teacher will come to you, or you can go to your teacher.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Can I, the Student, commit to a weekly lesson time that I choose? *Your lesson time will be the same each week *Yes, there are make-up lessons and future credits for absences. *Refunds only happen if you decide you will no longer be a Student at Point Breeze Piano, and you will be mailed a check for the remaining balance Can I afford to pay for a month's worth of lessons at a time? *A typical month of tuition for a Beginner Student at Point Breeze Piano is $260, or $65/week. *This is standard for all professionals, including every private instructor. For some people this is the deal breaker, but there's absolutely no wiggle room. All lessons for each month are paid for in advance. *THE FIRST LESSON (Consultation) IS FREE (Plus added travel fee for In-Home Students. See site for details.) If you're OK with the two main points above, I'd love to have you as a Student.
