Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My base fee is $100. The fee varies according to how far I drive and whether or not I write the entire service; and whether or not the couple desires pre-marital counseling.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I inquire as to their preferences about the flow of the service. I submit a proposal of service if they have not chosen a type of service.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a Master of Divinity; I am an ordained minister and a board certified chaplain. I have officiated weddings through Thumbtack, at the hospital where I serve as chaplain and in my community.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
As soon as I became ordained in 2010 a couple in my community asked if I would marry them. After I became a chaplain the first wedding I officiated was produced for a TLC show, Baby's First Day. After officiating a few weddings in the hospital I searched for a way to be able to officiate in other settings and eventually learned of Thumbtack. I wanted to be part of more of the joy of weddings. I named my business "Marvelous Moments."

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with couples with children, couples who have been divorced and wanted to re-marry each other and couples who prefer a civil service. I have married people who met at the hospital where I work and those whose family member was involved in an accident just before the wedding at their church; the wedding was postponed until the family member recovered but the couple wanted to be married in the hospital chapel and celebrate a few months later. I have married people whose parent was given a terminal diagnosis and not expected to live more than a few days. I have married people in a graveyard because 2 close family members had just died. I have married people at distilleries and in outdoor tents. I have married people in their homes. I have married people in a hospital chapel, beside hospital beds and in hospital waiting rooms. I have not married a couple in church but would be open to doing so.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I helped a couple incorporate the 4 children they share into the service, which included candles and hand-fasting. The service took place in a meadow. It took a couple of hours to write the service, 30 minutes to drive to the service and 1 hour to officiate the service.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
I would say that sensing that the officiate is respectful and joyful is important.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Will the officiant help them reflect their uniqueness?
