What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I am just getting started on Thumbtack and right now, reviews are more important than cost. I can officiate a wedding for as little as $200 depending on the length and complexity of the ceremony.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

It’s your day, the most important thing to me is hearing about what you would like and trying to tailor a service to your personality and relationship. Some weddings are very reverant and holy, others are more playful with lots of laughter, and those differences should be determined by the couple.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a postgraduate degree in Christian ministry called a Master of Divinity. I’m also certified for premarital counseling through a program called Prepare+Enrich, and when i was a itty bitty boy I went along with my father (who was also a minister) when he performed weddings.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I became an ordained minister first in order to lead a local church here in Austin. Weddings have been a small, but favorite, part of my job. I am blessed with the opportunity to be with people at many of the most important crossings of their life from Infancy, to the first rites of passage into adulthood, to marriage and eventually I am with people at the end of their lives. Of all of these, weddings are the most fun and joyous

What types of customers have you worked with?

I’ve worked with some couples that are very religious and deeply connected to church, some that have looser ties to their faith, and some that are completely secular. I have not served any couples who have strong ties to another organised religion like Judaism or Hinduism, and may not be the best choice for that kind of wedding.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

This is a strange question for a wedding. There was the one funny story where I had to tell a father of the bride to wait, because he could not wait to say he approved of the union.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Be picky, be bossy, tell the officiant (and really all of the people here for your wedding) what you really want. Many couples want to come across as easy going, but even if your preferences are only mild inclings in a direction, we want to make your dreams come true if we can. Also, it’s great practice for marriage to talk openly about what you want and how badly you want it in front of your fiance.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

What are some weddings you really enjoyed and want to emulate pieces of, from either your friends, or in movies and tv? What elements of service or rituals do you want to include? How liturgal and traditional do you want it to be, versus how bespoke and unique? How many of the decisions do you want to be made for you versus how much control do you want over the finished product?
