What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Most general work and small repairs work out to an hourly rate that can be discussed and scoped. Appliance installations have a flat fee for standard installations. If plumbing or electrical does not meet code, additional labor will be needed to finish the job.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

For all clients, I discuss the products and ideas the client wants to accomplish. I ask for photos of the area that needs work to get a better scope and discuss possible obstacles or outcomes. For smaller projects, I meet with the client on the day of work For larger projects, I will visit for a consultation and return with a quote for materials and labor within 7 days. After completing the work, I provide photos of the work done, the labor and materials, and additional things to look out for in the future.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

-2 years as a Kitchen Designer -5 years working with Lowe's in installation office( coordination and quality control) -BS in Mechanical Engineering Tech from Purdue University

How did you get started doing this type of work?

When I was growing up, these were common weekend projects. As a curious child, I was on the job site and began working with my family. We would build a deck or a carport or reframe the hallway for wheelchair accessibility. As I grew older, I began doing projects around the house, starting with painting, two bathroom renovations, a tiled kitchen backsplash, a 20ft x 20ft raised garden with shed, and the unfinished basement wall layout. As I grew into adulthood, I found a position at Lowe's and worked as a part of the installation office, determining materials for installers, fielding installer and customer issues, and planning future larger projects with Pro clients.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I have worked with customers who want input and help with a solution or design and those who know exactly what they want. I often work with clientele that return for future smaller tasks around the home. Whether it's mounting/moving an air conditioner unit or building a deck, I am here to assist.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I recently finished two projects I would like to share. 1) Renovating a 20x20 ft. deck with a new floor and rails. This project involved a subfloor, 5 layers of paint to finish, flashing on the side, and demolition, totaling 85 hours. 2) Creating a children's basement play place. The clients envisioned a place where the kids could blow off some steam. I came out great for the kids and parents. The kids got an indoor jungle gym, ceiling swings, a painted chalk wall, and an arts and crafts area. The parents got new color-changing LED lights, off-the-floor wall storage, and a quiet piece of mind. It was a joy to know that Christmas was a great surprise for the kids.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

1) Hire someone you trust. Some of the most important qualities in professionals are the lessons taught outside of school: honesty, transparency, quality, and most importantly, service after the job. Find someone who will check in with you and explain the issue. Trust is hard to come by in this industry. 2) "It's not what you do, but the way that you do it." Find a contractor willing and able to protect your floors, walls, and other items by providing drop cloths, canvas, or plastic covering. The sign that someone cares about your home as much as you do.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

What goals are you looking to accomplish? What products do you plan on using? What is your budget? It's helpful to know the products or ideas you plan to use. Asking professionals at major retail stores for project/product ideas can help. The size (square footage) of the project is always important to accurately scope.
