Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Pricing is competitive, and in the rare event a job needs to be revisited (adjustments, etc) there are no additional charges. Materials are billed at cost plus 10% to account for time, fuel, etc.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Most jobs can be estimated from a few photos and a phone conversation. Some jobs require on-site estimation at a charge.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
In high school I was a vocational technical student. I am a degreed engineer (B.S. mechanical and M.S. industrial).

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Early in my working life I apprenticed for four years under a cabinet maker and custom builder. I have been involved in trades ever since.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
My customers are primarily residential. My work is split between small, one-time jobs and participating in major remodel projects. On major remodels I typically work as a finish carpenter.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I am working with a couple in Hillsborough on the ongoing major remodel of their home. They are doing the job as they can afford it, so it has been underway for months. They are interested in design trends and are pretty fearless about trying new and unusual things. I have done everything from repairs to existing base structure to installing new baths and kitchen. It’s interesting, fulfilling work and I enjoy seeing their family enjoy the home.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Trust your gut, you know more than you think even if you don’t know the technical details of your job. Look for a provider who patiently explains things in language you understand. Also (perhaps unfortunately), my experience is that the low bid is not usually the best bid.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Ask about permitting, on-site time estimates, and scheduling of other jobs during your job. All pros manage multiple projects but you want somebody who carves out enough time to do your job without being distracted by other jobs.
