Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My rates for a one-hour session is $100 up to 2 people. I charge $25 more per hour for additional person more than 2. My minumum time for a session is typically 1 hour but it may be more if I am traveling more that 30 minutes to get to you. To travel to the client I charge $1 per mile one way. I DO NOT COUNT SET-UP AND BREAKDOWN OF MATS AGAINST THE SESSION TIME.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I will ask your experience and fitness level, and if you have an limitations, or need specific accommodations. I will ask your goals, make suggestions, and tailor a program to you accordingly. If you are a beginner, we will start with an overview and some basic concepts, so you will have a framework to hold and orient information- Like a road map, so you can see where we are headed, and eventually start to see the big picture. Initially, you will learn fundamental techniques that are the most effective and often used at all levels. As we progress, we can specialize more according to your individual aptitude, attributes, and preferences. My goal is for you to eventually be a martial artist. My job is to guide you on that journey. Eventually, part of that will be for me to allow for your own creativity, whenever it aligns with the principles that drive effective martial arts.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, under Alfredo Barum, in the Carlos Gracie Jr lineage. 5-2 record in Pro MMA (fights were Total Combat and Gladiator Challenge. My Sherdog profile can be found searching "Joshua Matthew Williams" , but does not list my 2014 win in Gladiator Challenge). Training in BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai, boxing since 2002. Purple belt in Tang Su Do (Korean Karate) at age 16 when I stopped to focus on wrestling. Second place in 1999 CIF high school wrestling (160 lbs). ACE personal training certification in 2013 or so, but have not renewed since I am really just focused on martial arts. Some kinesiology/sports medicine classes at San Diego City College.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My first martial art was Judo at about 7 years old (1988). From then on I have always been training in some capacity. I started at The San Diego Fight Club in 2002 for my professional level training. I started teaching there in 2009. My introduction to coaching Wrestling was in 2000.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
From 5 years old to 55 years old, male and female students of all ability levels. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is accessible even to people who are not considered traditionally athletic, because it relies so much on the intellect--like kinetic chess.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I have a some students that have been training with me for years now and their skills are getting so sharp that it even motivates and pushes me.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Research the history of UFC and Mixed Martial Arts to discover how it was a science experiment to prove which martial arts styles and techniques were most effective in reality. You will find that while MMA takes the best techniques of all styles, some styles are proven less effective, and the single most effective martial art for self defense is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belts must be earned by showing the ability to execute techniques against a fully resisting opponent, so that makes belt rank very valuable and representative of real-world skill. There are many people who claim that they can teach Jiu-Jitsu, but they don't list their belt rank. The attention to detail in techniques that comes from the experience of high belt rank in Jiu-Jitsu is very important. Also with the striking arts (Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, MMA) competition level experience by the instructor is the best way to know that what is taught will be effective when it counts.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
First you should research the history of the UFC and Mixed Martial Arts to see which martial arts have proven themselves most effective in reality. Then you should think about your overall goals, and which aspects of training you are interested in: Striking (boxing, muay thai), grappling (Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling), or both, and in what proportion. Based on your goals I will also have recommendations.
