Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I start all of my clients with an interview to determine their goals and develop a timeline and plan of action for reaching said goals. The next step is to perform a movement, performance and posture analysis. This simply gives me a starting point of reference so that I can track your progress as well as develop a customized program for your specific needs.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
1) BA in Exercise and Sport Science from UNC-Chapel Hill 2) NASM CPT, Certified Personal Trainer certification 3) American Red Cross First Aid/CPR

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I grew up playing sports, baseball and football but being undersized (and honestly under-skilled) didn't warrant me the opportunity to play in college. I was a frequent member at the gym and never really got out of shape but simply lifting weights didn't feed my competitive spirit. I came across a flyer for the boxing team in the bathroom one day and decided to try out. I made the team, but we were SORELY underfunded. We had to get very creative with different ways to challenge our bodies to produce peak performance. To come up with additional funds we started the boxing club, which was a non-competitive workout group that did boxing-inspired workouts. As the captain of the boxing team I was responsible for leading the workouts. I discovered that I loved helping people get in shape and build confidence so decided to make it a career!

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
1) 30-something former athletes who have been sucked into their desk job and want to become more active to improve their quality of life and improve their physique. 2) Lifetime athletes that are preparing for a 5k, obstacle run, or Boxing/MMA competition and want 1:1 attention for strength and conditioning. 3) Anybody that wants to build self-confidence, improve stamina and learn how to defend and protect themselves

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Aside from ensuring your trainer has the appropriate credentials you should also make sure that they are an attentive listener.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1) Why? Be honest with yourself about why you want to workout. If you simply want to look good naked, thats ok! Your trainer's approach towards developing your program can drastically change depending on what your actual goals are. 2) How much (time)? How much time can you commit to your workouts, meal prep, stretching etc? Think about frequency as well as duration per week. 3) What are your obstacles? By identifying the factors that have inhibited you from reaching your goals you and your trainer can start to develop a plan to overcome those road blocks.
