Introduction

Welcome to my page! I'm so glad you are thinking about flute or piano lessons! About me: I've been teaching piano and flute for about 50 years, beginner through advanced, including at the University of Kansas. I have a BM in music composition (minors in flute and piano) and a MM in flute performance. In addition to teaching, I am an accompanist/assistant conductor for the award winning Columbia Choirs of Metropolitan Seattle. My book, "Artistic Accompanying" is available at Amazon. My many years in music have afforded me as many opportunities, from performing in chamber music ensembles, orchestras, bands, and in competitions. Piano lessons focus on learning to play in the classical style, sight-reading, theory, and ear training. Repertoire is primarily classical. Flute instruction focuses on creating a beautiful tone, supple technique, sight-reading, theory, and ear training. Repertoire is primarily classical. I often work with students, however, to help prepare them for their solo/ensemble pieces for school, as well as auditions. For both piano and flute instruction, I use many materials from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada), and encourage students to be involved with the graded assessments that they offer. Most instruction right now is virtual, but I am doing a few lessons in person, depending on the circumstance.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

There are discounts for siblings, as well as when lessons for an entire session are paid in advance (September-December or January-May/June). Please note that pricing is the same for both piano and flute lessons, and that 30 minute, 45 minute, and 60 minute lessons are available on both piano and flute. Students may pay per lesson. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

The first step is to actually talk with you, usually through a phone appointment. If the student has already had private lessons, the first "lesson" is an opportunity for the student to show me how they play, and what they know. This is, effectively, a free lesson. If the student has not had lessons before, we just meet at the first lesson, and go from there. With flute students, I use predominantly the Rubank methods, as well as the Royal Conservatory materials. In piano, I also use materials from the Royal Conservatory. I encourage students to take part in the Royal Conservatory assessments. You can learn more about this program at the web site for The Royal Conservatory.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

MM in Flute Performance, and BM in Music Composition with minors in piano and flute, both from the University of Kansas. Special studies with Ransom Wilson (french technique), Betty Bang Mather (Baroque studies) and Roger Mather, and Jean-Pierre Rampal in flute. Special studies at the Aspen Music Festival with Michael Czajkowski in composition. Special studies with Robert Steinbauer in piano. I have been teaching either piano or flute since I was 15, and taught flute for two years at the University of Kansas. Besides maintaining a private studio, I have worked since 1992 with children's choirs, including the highly acclaimed Indianapolis Children's Choir (accompanist) and the award-winning Columbia Choirs of Metropolitan Seattle (accompanist and assistant conductor). How did you get started doing this type of work?

Music has been a part of my life since I was very small, having been a part of a musical family. I began teaching in high school as a way to have some supplemental income. That singular experience blossomed over the years, so that now I have my own studio for piano and flute instruction.

What types of customers have you worked with?

My students have included ages 6 -adult. And I have been teaching remotely for the past year, using Zoom.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

It is important that you understand what style of music you want your student to learn (classical or jazz, for instance). Having a teacher with teaching experience is invaluable. There is no substitute for this. Also, consider if your student is able to give the time to practice that the teacher would like the student to put in.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

What length of lesson would you like to have? Am I (or my child) willing to put in the practice necessary to advance? (For piano lessons) Is my keyboard or piano adequate for learning how to play? Do I have the resources to purchase or rent a flute or piano?
