Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Private studio: $50-75/hr At your home: $85/hr Online training sessions: $40/hr Tailored workout plans only: $100/month Shorter sessions and discounts available

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I begin with a free initial consultation to see if we are a good fit. If we both agree to work together we start with a brief medical history and then a physical fitness test. Sometimes a physician approval is required. After fitness testing we develop a plan that includes the client's home or gym workout sessions. After a few initial sessions to learn proper form, I give the client a set of exercises they can start doing on theiri own. These are periodically evaluated and changed.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I went to medical school which gives me a background in some of the injuries that can occur with improper training. I am able to evaluate current trends in fitness by researching through accurate sources and I avoid fads that are not backed by evidence. I have over ten years of experience with my own trainer and mentor. I earn the required continuing education credits required by the NASM.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
After the birth of my second child I gained a considerable amount of weight. I had never been athletic before that time. I decided to join a gym and over time decided to hire a personal trainer. In the process of working on my own fitness goals I studied the standard Personal Training textbooks. Eventually I took the ACE fitness training exam and obtained a certification. I realized that training others is something I enjoy.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with many beginner clients, obese clients, athletes, teens, seniors, and athletes. I have had both male and female clients.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Look for credentials such as degrees in exercise science or certifications through organizations such as NASM or ACE. Ask for their personal training approach. A trainer should make injury prevention a priority. Avoid trainers who promise results. Instead look for someone who will work with you on setting reasonable goals.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. Consider the location. Do you prefer working out at a large gym, a small studio, or in a home setting? 2. What is your budget? Many trainers have flexible rates depending on how many sessions you want per month. If you have a set budget you can negotiate a certain number of sessions per month. More sessions with a trainer is sometimes better but it is a significant expense. 3. If you have a gym membership, can the trainer go with you as a guest and show you around, or somehow help you with your regular gym workouts? 4. Is the trainer available in between sessions to help you with your day to day exercise plan? 5. Make sure you point out any physical limitations to the trainer. The trainer should be able to modify your plan to address those limitations and avoid injury. For example, if you have a shoulder injury or weakness you should not be doing a pushup test in the initial evaluation. 6. Make sure you have physician clearance. Injuries are extremely common and often unavoidable so have a regular physician you can call when you have strains, sprains or any other pain. Your trainer will not diagnose anything or prescribe anything for pain other than perhaps muscle soreness from exercise.
