Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I'm pretty flexible and I try to be retail services because I'm just a guy with low overhead. I don't like any surprises on pricing though, so I usually won't throw a number out until it's pretty clear what's going on. I will often wave any fee at all if I determine I can't help with the problem depending on the type of the job and I try to determine that before we go anywhere with the job.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I'll usually try to assess the problem with some questions either over text or the phone and sometimes in person depending on the job. Then I'll see if there has been any prior evaluation either by the customer or a professional and then check on the situation myself and try to make a determination about the problem.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I've been doing work with electronics and computers since I was a little boy. I've been a professional landlord for 10 years and I've been doing contracting and handyman things for about 15 years.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I tended to look into solving problems with systems and other things in any circumstance I was in.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Usually individuals. Occasionally with companies. I work with all kinds. I don't have any particular targeted market. I will say that I work really well with people who are trying to solve problems or who need problems solved.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Recently, I learned how to do lock picking on the fly because I was presented with a job to replace a lock and there was no other way to get to it without destroying the cabinet.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Generally speaking you should look for a guy who will tell you stuff straight or say if he doesn't know something and why and give a good reason. For instance, you don't want a guy who's just throwing off prices just to throw them off and then changing them later. And don't just take a thing because it's rock bottom pricing. You get what you pay for. Maybe they cut corners maybe they won't warranty the work. I've seen it all. Lastly, a guy who is willing to come back tomorrow because he doesn't think he's done is better than the guy who will wrap everything up real quick in order to say he's done at the expected time.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
You should generally be aware of what you're willing to spend and when you want to do it. Thumbtack charges us for these connections we make with you and it doesn't take a lot of communication with you before we're on the hook for $20.
