Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Unlike many competitors, all of our rates are available on our website. There are no hidden fees. Wardrobe updates are available for $460 and include up to four hours of shopping. Other services like a Closet Consultation are offered at a flat rate of $395 (including up to 3 hrs) and a Home Rescue Visit (2 hr in-home session to build you a lookbook) is offered for $260. The best part is that if you are interested in more than one service or looking to work together on a regular basis, we offer a number of discounted packages that allow you to save up to 25% simply by purchasing your services together.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When working with a new client we like to learn as much as we can about them so that we can customize a plan that is catered to their needs. We send new clients a detailed questionnaire so that we can gather information regarding style preferences, measurements, and budget. This information allows us to select stores and designers that we feel would be a good match.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Our CEO, Valerie, has been styling clients since 2010, but grew up in retail as her father owned his own clothing store. She has worked with hundreds of men and women, spanning all ages, sizes, budgets and styles, across 22 countries. Although Shop With Val’s portfolio is very diverse in that regard, our specialty is helping those in need of a seasonal update or wardrobe overhaul. As Shop With Val grows, Valerie trains her stylists to ensure they have the experience and know-how to accommodate all kinds of requests, including petite, plus, formal, tall, maternity, modest, bridal, small budgets, and special occasions. Her team is fully equipped to handle any request you bring their way.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
In 2010, our CEO, Valerie, was hired to help a friend in need after she had put on some weight and found herself in a style rut. After just a few hours together, she walked away with tons of new pieces and found herself repeating, "I would have never picked this out myself, but I love it!" She was standing up a little taller and full of smiles and confidence once she understood how to dress her new body. After having great success with her friend, Valerie realized it was time to put her shopping and styling skills to good use to help others the same way. A few months later, Shop With Val was born.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Our portfolio exemplifies the diversity of our clientele. Our customers range from teens who are given our services as a gift from a parent or family member to young professionals looking to build a work wardrobe, to mommy's to be looking for maternity wear, to a group of friends visiting NYC for the first time. The scenarios are endless. We work with those in creative industries who need headshots or are preparing for an audition, as well as couples and families who are preparing for a photo shoot. Most of the requests we receive though are from clients looking to update their wardrobe for the season or in need of a wardrobe overhaul. If your size has changed, you're job hunting or have started a new job or relocated we're here to help make the transition as smooth as possible. No matter what the reason, Shop With Val is here to cater to all of your wardrobe and styling needs.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Our CEO, Valerie, recently worked with a woman, who was surprised by her family with our services as a birthday gift. After losing a significant amount of weight, and retiring from her job, she felt she had nothing to wear to fit her new lifestyle. After a Closet Consultation and full day of shopping Valerie truly watched her transform, not just physically, but emotionally. She couldn't stop saying "thank you" and expressing how excited she was to get dressed and go out again. It was an extremely rewarding experience. Since then, we have had the pleasure of working with her daughter, too!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
If you're looking to hire a professional in your area look for someone you can connect with on a personal level as well as professional. So much of what I do isn't just about the clothes, but rather teaching clients and allowing them to feel confident and attractive. When you open your home to someone or share a fitting room with them you are letting them in to a very personal part of your life.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Before hiring a pro, be sure to ask about years of experience in the field, rates (and any hidden fees), special offers/discounts, testimonials and featured press. Testimonials may be one of the most important! I believe reviews speak for themselves!
